Council services could be interrupted as workers threaten to strike

Unite confirmed it has informed all 32 Scottish councils that strike ballots will take place from June 10 to July 26, with any resulting strike action likely to take place at the start of the school year in August.

Unions have rejected a 2% pay offer from the Scottish Local Authorities Convention as they believe it is insufficient given the cost of living crisis which has driven inflation to over 11%.

It is estimated that more than half of Scotland’s 250,000 local government workers earn less than £25,000 a year for a 37-hour week. Unite earlier this month also called on all new Scottish local authority council leaders to take immediate action to improve pay, or see strikes this summer.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite will now vote for thousands of our members in each of Scotland’s thirty-two local authorities. The last offer on the employer’s table was a pathetic 2%. With the wider cost of living now at 11.1%, this is a huge and simply unacceptable pay cut.

“Our members do not tolerate this and they will have the full support of their union in the fight for better jobs, wages and conditions.”

Wendy Dunsmore, Unite Industrial Officer, added: “Unite has notified the thirty-two local authorities. COSLA has acknowledged that the 2% offer is far from sufficient and that local government workers deserve a significant raise. However, we now need action, not words and more letters, or a strike is on the horizon.

In April, 91% of Unite members confirmed they would be willing to take industrial action.

Gerry Cornes, chief executive of East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “Wage negotiations are being conducted nationally between the unions and COSLA and we hope a resolution can be found soon which will address the urgency of the cost of life while taking into account the public sector. funding crisis. We hope that as unions continue to engage with COSLA, this can be achieved. »
