Expo teaches potential lifeline for aged care facilities

ISSA Cleaning & Hygiene Expo 2022 will showcase the latest cleaning products and health lessons at a time when senior care and retirement facilities are battling a new wave of COVID-19 outbreaks.

The latest innovations in disinfection and sanitation for aged care and retirement facilities will be showcased at ISSA Cleaning & Hygiene Expo 2022 in Sydney on September 14-15.

The Expo will allow cleaners, chemical suppliers and hygiene product distributors – who have been at the forefront of protecting aged care centers and healthcare facilities during the pandemic – to meet for the first time since the start of COVID-19.

ISSA, the global cleaning industry association, is hosting the event at the Sydney International Convention Centre. Lauren Micallef, ISSA’s Oceania Manager, says the event gives senior care CEOs, policy makers and procurement managers access to the latest industry trends and insights. “They will be able to see and hear about life-saving innovations in facilities where people reside or are cared for,” says Micallef.

Market innovations

This year’s event will feature over 3,000 attendees, 70 exhibitors, over 40 speakers, 16 free speaker sessions and four more workshops.

Mark Phelan, Commercial Director – Professional at Freudenberg Home and Cleaning Solutions, silver sponsor, will be present at the event. He says the Expo is the “perfect stage” to introduce new products and solutions to market. “We look to this event to show our cleaning solutions and see what other exhibitors are offering,” he says.

Phelan believes that making connections and understanding the latest trends in healthcare and other sectors is key to the Expo. “It’s the ability to talk to people, understand what new directions and challenges are, and be inspired to improve and be better at what we do.”

At the two-day event in Darling Harbour, Associate Professor Dr Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, Senior Director of the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, will co-present a session on “How the Invisible is Now Seen in Cleaning, Disinfecting and the Prevention of Infectious Diseases for Facilities’ It will cover technical issues related to cleanliness testing, cleaning challenges and methods, and the best disinfection methods to ensure improved human safety.

“As more and more people realize that the built environment influences their health, cleaning for health is a key issue for everyone,” says Dr Macgregor-Skinner. “When you clean, you should follow evidence-based practices to create healthier cleaning, avoid cross-contamination, and avoid potentially toxic cleaning procedures.”

He urges managers of aged care and retirement facilities to use third-party programs such as ISSA’s GBAC STAR to ensure that cleaning procedures, products and equipment focus on the health requirements of the built environment, as well as on cleaning workers and building occupants.

“We find that more and more people are sensitive to chemicals and that improper cleaning can damage surfaces and be very expensive to repair or replace. Our “First, Do No Harm” goal is to do no harm to building occupants, our workers and the built environment, but at the same time, we eliminate the germs that make us sick. »

Dr. Greg Whiteley, Executive Chairman of Whiteley, will co-present the session with Dr. Macgregor-Skinner. He says the Expo is a vital part of the cleaning industry, “particularly this year, as it gives all attendees the opportunity to tap into the latest industry trends as companies emerge from lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions”.

Education in the foreground

The Expo’s educational program promises to be a highlight and will cover a wide range of important topics, including corporate social responsibility; technology and innovation; cleaning and hygiene of elderly care; and the risk of working with chemicals.

Micallef encourages representatives from aged care facilities and nursing homes to attend the Expo. “There is no other event like this in the Southern Hemisphere and it gives facilities a chance to be industry leaders in cleaning, health and hygiene.”
