Mills James Evolves Hotel and Convention Center Communications with Global Holographic Technology

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Imagine if hotel brand executives or A-list celebrities could speak at annual conventions without actually showing up. If characters from popular animated films could personally greet families in real-time hotel lobbies or high-end outlets at resorts and casinos, mannequins were replaced by people modeling jewelry and clothes.

Meet Proto, a hologram unit that can project anyone anywhere – live or pre-produced in three dimensions. Proto Inc. (formerly PORTL) is the world’s first two-way interactive holographic communications platform available to hospitality businesses through Mills James. Recently named Best AV Provider by Ohio Affairs MagazineMills James is looking for hotels, restaurants and convention centers in the United States interested in exploring holoportation technology.

Here’s the view from the front row of the Harvard Blockchain Conference where Proto Inc teleported Ava Labs CEO Emin Gun Sirer from Barcelona to Boston for an interactive live chat with John Wu.

“Proto can change how attendees interact with speakers and how hotel guests interact with management or the brand,” said John Watts, vice president of technology at Mills James. “The possibilities are endless. Proto can be used for speeches, event appearances, booth displays, to share stay safe messages, upsell services, address customer concerns, promote restaurant specials, display retail items, and much more. Because Proto is interactive, people streaming live to the unit can respond to those in front of the box if they choose.”

“How memorable would it be for guests to interact with a sports celebrity playing in the adjacent stadium, see celebrity chefs cook the daily special or meet the brand president upon arrival? It’s not only entertaining, but it’s the kind of next-gen technology people expect to see while travelling.” Watts said.

Proto CEO David Nussbaum, “If you can’t BE there, BEAM there.”

Can’t be there? Radiate there.

Proto has a backlit cabin and a large transparent LCD screen, giving the impression that someone is in the box. The live-streaming technology is the brainchild of Proto CEO David Nussbaum, who at the start of the pandemic realized “if you can’t be there, shine there”. Today, there are over two hundred Protos worldwide, mostly used in retail establishments and shopping malls. All it takes to communicate with someone in the box is an internet connection of 15mg to 20mg per second. The speakers can be filmed wirelessly via a smartphone and the Proto app, then streamed wirelessly to the Proto box.

“Proto” means “first,” and the name indicates that the company was the first to create a two-way interactive holographic communication platform. Proto was the first to:

  • transport patients to a major medical center for education
  • introduce a new product in another country without traveling
  • present a volumetric NFT display
  • host live interviews on a major television network during the Super Bowl
  • allow consumers to become a hologram with just a smartphone

Proto technology was used to transmit Nathan Faavae, six-time world adventure racing champion, via hologram projection during the Avaya event.

“Mills James’ mission is to transform the way hotels, convention centers and Fortune 500 companies view their AV partner.” Watts said. “We deliver AV solutions worthy of our customers’ service standards by bringing a unique combination of business expertise, service skills, technical acumen, creative scalability and financial packages that deliver exceptional value.”

“Our partnership with Proto will allow us to set the bar even higher on AV services,” he added. “Today, we are looking for hotel companies and convention venues interested in exploring Proto technology to elevate experiences to heights never before imagined. Operators – and even meeting planners – looking for a fun way to bring the future to their facility or event should call Mills James today.
