Scramble at convention venue, police deploy dogs to control crowd

Chuks Okocha in Abuja
There was a stampede at the ongoing All Progressive Congress national convention in Eagles Square, Abuja. More than 30 people were injured, including a pregnant party member.
Police dogs were, however, deployed to control the large crowd of delegates.
According to an eyewitness, police and the Civil Defense Corps chased delegates and party supporters with dogs.
THISDAY gathered that delegates had stormed the venue waiting for clearance since 6:30 a.m.
Stewards and other party men and women lost patience and began pushing each other complaining about the slow clearance.
It was understood that the police had to use tear gas as the crowd got out of hand and in doing so a stampede ensued.
The police were seen beating people with batons as they tried to control the crowd.
Some were reportedly injured at the entrance to the venue where the massive crowd was waiting to be screened by security guards.
It was learned that the pace of screening was slow due to the large crowds when the stampede occurred and security guards at the gate stood helpless.
Some APC stalwarts and leaders were seen arriving at the scene around noon.
The delay was due to various meetings to finalize the arrangement for the consensus candidate.
